The 1991 Côte-Rôtie La Mouline is more exotic on the nose than the La Landonne, leaning more towards red fruit with traces of lavender, inkwell and curry leaf. Where it really comes into its own is in terms of structure, as if borrowing the tannins from a Richebourg, exerting more grip with immense depth and mineralité on the finish. It coheres magnificently with aeration and clearly possesses the most sapidity of the three single vineyards. Magical. (NM)

The lineup started with an evolved, yet brilliant 1991 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline. The oldest of the La-Las (first produced in 1966) and coming all from the Côte Blonde, this was easy to pick out due to the lighter color, as well as the brilliant mature northern Rhône aromatics of exotic spice, saddle leather, smoked bacon, and assorted meaty Syrah characteristics. Medium to full-bodied and fully integrated and silky, this thrilling bottle held up over the 3+ hours of the evening without fading in the slightest, so while at maturity, there’s plenty of life left.
The 1991 La Mouline appears to be another perfect wine in the making, with a staggering bouquet of violets, bacon fat, sweet cassis fruit, and toasty oak. The wine exhibits superb density. It is tasting even richer and more concentrated than it did during its first several years of life. With 8% Viognier in the blend and made from extremely low yields (only 400 cases produced), it is a phenomenal wine. I find it more seductive than the nearly perfect 1990. Readers should be getting in their reservations now for Guigal's 1991 single vineyard Cote Roties. In 1991, Cote Rotie enjoyed the most success of any appellation of France.
