Disgorged in 2010 and now at full maturity, the 2000 Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne is drinking with great generosity, wafting from the glass with a deep bouquet that mingles aromas of roasted cacao beans, gingerbread, lemon confit and marzipan with a touch of buttered toast. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and multifaceted, ample and textural, with a layered core yet without any heaviness, enlivened by a pinpoint mousse and culminating in a long, enveloping finish. If you own a bottle, why not open one tonight?

Pale straw. Very fresh and refreshing. Riesling-esque. Mouth-filling and filigree textured. Nicely matured – we’re at a good point to drink this. A delightful surprise, this one. Not a vintage with a fabulous reputation but it has developed well, better than Loïc Dupont expected, and this is beautifully balanced. (JR)
