I was delighted to experience some sense of sweetly ripe fruit here – white peach and yellow plum – that helped overcome the tendency toward austerity common to most wines in this Spanier collection. That’s not to suggest a lack of flavors for which a mineral vocabulary is appropriate, as there are decisive evocations of chalk and stone. Scents of thyme, a high-toned hint of mirabelle distillate, and bittersweet accents of walnut add to this bottling’s complex appeal. It features sappy palate presence and persistence, albeit less energy and sheer grip than exhibited by the corresponding Schwarzen Herrgott.

The 2015 Nieder-Florsheim Frauenberg Riesling trocken GG offers a dusty, chalky/lemony, still slightly reductive but clear and complex nose, with ripe but precise fruit aromas. Very elegant on the silky textured palate, this is an intense and concentrated though medium-weighted, dry Riesling. It is vivacious with great finesse and a clear, chalky expression. The finish is enormous and full of tension. This is an impressive wine.
