Note di degustazione
The grapes for the Freedom come from 157-year old Shiraz vines...wow! Aged in American oak (50% new), and bottled with no fining or filtration, the 1998 Shiraz The Freedom exhibits a dark ruby/purple color, a one-dimensional character, but plenty of power, density, richness, and weight. Although foursquare at present, it may develop more nuances/dimensions with another 2-3 years of cellaring. It should age well for 10-12 years. Importer: Epicurean Wine, Seattle, WA; tel. Deep bright ruby. Vibrant aromas of cassis, black raspberry, bacon fat and smoked meat. Spicy, penetrating flavors of dark berries and coffee bean. Began almost severe next to the '99 basic release, due to its firm acidity and sheer intensity, but this wine impressively long aftertaste suggests that it will reward patience. My score would have been higher had the wine not shown a pronounced tarry quality and elevated wood tannins with extended aeration.
