The 2011 Ried Vom Stein Riesling Smaragd is deep and intense on the quite matured nose that offers ripe and stewed stone fruit aromas intermingled with poppyseed, melted butter and flinty aromas, just like the 2014 yet here with more intensity and apparently also fruit ripeness. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, fresh and vital, saline and grippy Riesling with the protecting tannins of the warm and sunny vintage and a long, intense and aromatic finish. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Archive Release 2024. Tasted in January 2025.

Pear, apple and blueberry are shadowed by their spirituous counterparts in a nose that also brings a meadow-like mingling of grasses and flowers. Clear and juicy, silky in texture and buoyant, this carries haunting floral notes into its lingering finish underlaid by wet stone. It reveals the inherent generosity and ripeness of its vintage, yet boasts a subtlety and still-refreshing juiciness, not to mention (at little more than 12% alcohol) levity and cool restraint, that few if any other 2011 Austrian Rieslings can muster.
