A fifth red wine is made at Rayas that is basically an assemblage of all the discarded lots. Called Pialade, the 2001 is a nice bistro-styled red that I rated in the low eighties. It is best drunk during its first several years of life. Like most Chateauneuf du Pape domaines, I did not see anything while tasting through the 2002 reds that would suggest they could be recommended in this publication. Ch. Rayas is a cult name in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wines – pure, silken expressions of Grenache with distinctive perfume – are revered for their singularity and fiercely collected. Made by Emmanuel Reynaud and renowned for their ageability, they have become some of the region's most sought-after.
