Brilliant ruby. Mineral-accented cherry, redcurrant and licorice scents are complemented by a suggestion of dark chocolate. Ripe red and dark berry flavors show good depth but a faint dry edge. Picks up a spicy note with air and finishes firm and tight, with slightly gritty tannins and good length.

Kicking off the 2012s, Saint Siffrein’s straight Châteauneuf du Pape offers loads of kirsch, mulled spice, blackberry and garrigue in its classic, medium to full-bodied, ripe and textured style. Made from 65% Grenache, 15% each of Mourvedre and Syrah and the rest Cinsault, aged 12 moths in stainless steel and foudre, it’s an outstanding, Provencal effort to drink over the coming 8-10 years.
Dark ruby. Dried cherry, rhubarb, licorice and a suggestion of woodsmoke on the pungent nose. Firm and tightly focused, with dark fruit flavors accented by an earthy quality and notes of black tea, lavender and bitter chocolate. On the rustic side.
Palestor, Cabrières, Boislauzon. 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre, 5% Cinsault. Liquorice and treacle. Sweet and supple and really rather exciting! Lots going on here and it finishes with grace. Yummy. Pungent. (JR)
