Pichler's 2014 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Kellerberg opens with a deep and complex bouquet with crushed stone aromas intertwined with flint, crushed coffee beans, snow pea and citrus flavors. Very salty and full of tension on the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied, yet pure, straight and mineral Gruner with a long, grippy and very stony finish. Great aging potential.

Tropical ripeness of pineapple, mango and passion fruit are tinged on nose and palate with site-typically smoky Szechuan and Madagascar peppercorn. A voluminous, glossy, almost creamy palate impression in no way compromises what is by Kellerberg standards a fine sense of refreshment and freedom from heaviness. The prodigious finish is tangy and bright as well as invigoratingly incisive, piquantly smoky suggestions of toasted buckwheat and rye teaming up with peppercorn and Latakia tobacco. “This incorporates pickings from the beginning to the end of November,” explains Lucas Pichler, “whereby very ripe material from lightly shriveled fruit and from botrytis-affected old vines that we would otherwise have utilized for an ‘M’ bottling is included. And perhaps we should have left it out,” he adds with typical candor and reflectiveness.
