Deep ruby. Sexy, mineral-accented aromas of ripe red berries, candied lavender and Indian spices show very good clarity. Supple, seamless raspberry and cherry compote flavors are nicely concentrated and focused, and a hint of smokiness builds on the back half. At once rich and vibrant, finishing with repeating spiciness and gentle tannic grip.

Most likely the top Côtes du Rhône made in the vintage is the 2013 Côtes du Rhône le Clos du Caillou Reserve. From vineyards bordering Châteauneuf du Pape and incredibly low yields of 19 hectoliters per hectare, this beauty sports a deep ruby color to go with notes of chocolaty dark fruits, pepper, roasted herbs and loamy earth. Medium to full-bodied, rounded and textured, it needs a decant if drinking anytime soon, and will have a decade of prime drinking.
85% Grenache, 15% Syrah. On mainly sandy soils from the Clos which, for pretty odd historic reasons, wasn’t classified as Châteauneuf. Very old Grenache and younger Mourvèdre that wasn’t good enough to make this wine in 2012 . Mid ruby. Very rich and round. Fun and superior. So much delivery for the money! Spice and polish.
