Previously recommended, but no tasting note given. Martinelli’s Zinfandel portfolio continues to grow, with as many as five different offerings now available. The 2006 and 2007 Jackass Hill Vineyard cuvees were not tasted at this visit. However, the other four wines I tasted, all from steep hillside vineyard sites with the newer plantings planted from bud wood of both the Jackass Hill and Jackass vineyards, were brilliant. Inky ruby. Complex, very ripe bouquet of spicy red and dark berries, candied plum and smoked meat. Fleshy raspberry and blackberry liqueur flavors coat the palate and offer excellent depth, but also good energy. This actually comes across as elegant in spite of the massive, liqueur-like fruit. Picks up a wild, gamey quality on the long, clinging finish. This won't convince fans of restrained wine but those who gravitate toward big, assertively fruity pinots will go nuts for it.
