Pears, minerals, and slate are found in the nose of the rich, lush, and broad 2002 Riesling Spatlese Kaseler Nies’chen. A wine of power and elegance, it bursts on the palate with loads of spicy white peaches, pears, and juicy candied lemons. Deep, complex, and revealing a persistent, flavorful finish, it is a candidate for drinking between 2005 and 2020. These are the finest wines I’ve tasted from Weingut Karlsmuhle. Yes, even better than its fabulous 2001s... While congratulations to winemaker Peter Geiben are in order, he needs to know that 3 of the 7 samples tasted for this report were corked (new samples were re-tasted), a totally unacceptable percentage. Also, readers should note that these wines will require substantial air if opened in the next 2-3 years. White peach, honey and flowers in the bouquet. There is the same delicacy and refined minerality here as in the Kabinett wines but with enhanced glossiness of texture and ripeness of pit fruit and red berry suggestions. Vanilla- and cinnamon-tinged fruit with salty mineral suggestions in a long, evocative finish. Fabulously well balanced and engaging wine to sip and to contemplate on its own. 2 stars.
