Punteggio 89/100 · Da bere 2022-2025, Mark Squires, Jul 2022

The 2011 Asirtiko / Athiri is 75% Assyrtiko (notwithstanding the inconsistent spelling on Sigalas's old label) with 25% Athiri. This was one of my favorites in the old brand, but it is probably fair to say it has already seen its best days. The cork (Nomacorc) was perfect and this still has a lot to offer, and I still wound up liking it. Powerful and gripping, it is fairly intense on the finish. There are oxidative nuances, though, and that gives the fruit an overlay that is less than classic. For all of that, this seems deep and powerful, still a fine wine to pair up with foods. It is vigorous and lively and of course complex. As it aired out and warmed, it actually began to drink pretty well. That's a nice performance for this bargain wine at over 10 years old. How much longer? It won't suddenly become awful, but I'd drink up and assume its time has come. It is just past prime now and that won't improve. It is already at a point where it won't likely win universal acclaim. Some will certainly value its virtues, while others will fixate on the flaws.
