Even better is the 2007 Château de Montfaucon Côtes du Rhône Baron Louis! An outstanding blend of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Carignan, Counoise, and Mourvèdre that’s aged in 60% neutral French oak for 18 months, it boast knockout aromatics of smoked cherries, lavender, fresh garrigue, and flowers that gives way to a medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced wine. Ripe, fleshy, yet with beautiful balance and focus, this serious Côtes du Rhône is brilliant now with a decant, yet should continue to shine for 4-6 years or more. Very well done and a solid value.

Their top wine. Baron Louis was half Scots. This is a multi-varietal wine along the lines of Châteauneuf and includes some Counoise. About half was barrel aged. Very decent though perhaps not outstanding when one thinks quite how many southern Rhône wines there are! Sandy and calcareous soils. (JR)
A new discovery for me, the 2007 Cotes du Rhone (a 4,000+-case blend of Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, Cinsault, and Counoise) is a seriously built, concentrated, powerful effort displaying notes of garrigue, pepper, lavender, kirsch, and black currants. It also exhibits that wonderful seaweed wrapper (nori) scent that seems to be a characteristic of many southern Rhone wines. This full-bodied Cotes du Rhone will benefit from another 1-2 years of cellaring, and should drink well for 7-8 years. Importer: Maverick Selections, Novato, CA; tel. (707) 363-2590
