Of the four Merlots, the least expensive, the 2001 Napa Merlot, is the only one that has reached maturity. Soft, sexy notes of melted caramel, coffee beans and lush red and black currant fruit are found in this delicious, medium-bodied, opulent, seductive offering. Enjoy it over the next 7-8 years. With nine separate offerings, all performing exceptionally well, Duckhorn Vineyards must be thrilled with the evolution of their 2001s. This is a terrific performance for these Duckhorn wines with most of them showing better than they did upon release – always a great sign. Tel. (866) 367-9945; Fax (707) 945-1009

Red-ruby. Very ripe aromas of roasted berries, game, nuts, cola and smoke. Rich and sweet, with black raspberry, truffle and meat flavors. Offers a nice light touch and plenty of personality for California merlot. Finishes fairly tannic but not dry, with good length. (In comparison, the 2000 Howell Mountain merlot was too green and astringent on the back end.)
Ruby-red. Aromas of currant, pipe tobacco, licorice and flowers. Spicy flavors of black raspberry, cassis, tar and chocolate. Tannins are ripe but slightly dry, and the finish shows a hint of raw oak.
