The 2018 Riesling Vom Roten Schiefer offers a wide yet intense, refined and spicy-mineral bouquet with an almost Alsatian generosity, complexity and elegance. Juicy and intense on the refreshingly pure and crystalline palate, this is an already-accessible dry Riesling from the Pündericher Marienburg's parcels on iron-rich reddish slate soils. It is very refined and elegant but fresh and with remarkable finesse. Excellent and with a persistent finish. Tasted from AP 3119 in July 2020.

Mirabelle and white peach on the nose are infused with crushed stone on a lush, polished palate. Nips of cress, light sizzle of sage, piquancy of peach kernel and a smoky, stony red-slate-typical mineral note make for a lingering finish as fascinatingly diverse as it is (thankfully) refreshing.
Repeated swirling of the red slate in liquid form brings out an intriguing composition of stone fruit and almond kernel. Once again the texture is incredibly viscous, but the fruit is a little more forthcoming with peach including stone and even a nuance of grapefruit, pith and all. I would not call it sweet, but the way in which the elements of fruit, nut kernel and a hint of graphite work with each other it just appears a little less dry. (MS)
