The highlight in this set of new releases, the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Rattlesnake Hill is a beautiful, dark wine full of mystery and intrigue. Plum, melted road tar, smoke and exotic spices all flesh out in a big, dramatic Cabernet Sauvignon loaded with personality. The 2011 is a brooding, intense wine. There is a lot going on in the glass, as layers of flavor unfold over time. Readers will have to give the 2011 a few years in bottle, but it is impressive.

The flagship offering, the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Rattlesnake Hill comes from a small, rocky vineyard planted at a 2,000 foot elevation on Spring Mountain. The most seriously endowed wine of this quartet, it is deep, rich and full-bodied with copious notes of blueberries, black raspberries, crushed rock and spring flowers. With more depth and tannin than its siblings, this wine transcends the overall quality and general impression of the 2011 vintage. It has a Bordeaux-like structure superimposed on Spring Mountain’s ripe fruit, it should be forgotten for 4-5 years, and drunk over the following 10-15 years. As hard as it is for me to believe, Barnett Vineyards is celebrating their 30th anniversary, having jumped into the winemaking business at their beautiful estate high on Spring Mountain in 1983. Tel.
