Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2023-2030, Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate, Dec 2023

The 2019 Rippon Mature Vine Pinot Noir is nuanced and spicy, welcoming and detailed. This is quite different from the 2020 tasted beside it, and the acidity has a succulent blood orange tang (no additions—Nick says, "Have you seen the glacier?"). This is an excellent wine here, supple, slinky, red fruited and fresh. I love the gently trippy tannins. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam.

Full bottle (not screwcapped) 1,293 g. Hand-picked from mature, biodynamically grown vines in Lake Wanaka on the western board of Roy’s Bay. Rippon’s north-facing escarpment forms the meeting point of terminal moraines and coarse gravels, all based in schist, on which some of the region’s earliest vines were planted. Spontaneous fermentation and cellared in barrel for two winters before being run off directly into bottle without fining or filtration. Cool service temperature and decanting are recommended. Very sophisticated, complex nose with both fruit and undergrowth tones. Wow! Some spice and a perfect balance between fruit and acidity. Great presence and freshness without being remotely skinny. Really very glorious now, although there is a little undercurrent of almost imperceptible tannin. (JR)

The 2019 Pinot Noir Mature Vine is textural, supple and fine with violets and red cherry, lightly spiced with nutmeg-like flavors on the calm finish. Fine, tranquil with detailed powdery tannins that coat the mouth in layers. Starting to blossom in bottle.

Bright crimson. Mid crimson. Leafy, interesting nose. No sweetness whatsoever. Real purity of expression that’s clearly informed by the vineyard rather than the winery or market expectation. Even a little saline/mineral. Distinctive. Edgy and should be very long lasting but no compromises. (JR)
