Allemand continues to turn out densely-colored, rich, ripe, full-bodied Cornas that are increasingly among the best wines of the appellation. The 1994 Cornas Reynards is made from extremely old vines. It possesses an inner-core of intense, rich fruit that only comes from low yields and old vines. The wine exhibits a deep ruby/black color, wonderful purity and ripeness, and a long, lush, low-acid, fat, unctuously-textured finish. It should drink well for 10 years. Allemand’s wines set the benchmark for Cornas: expressive Syrahs crafted with uncompromising traditional methods and released in tiny quantities. From the 1980s, he revived abandoned vineyards on Cornas’s steep granite slopes, building his domaine without inherited land or financial support.
