“If anything,” noted Frank Schönleber, “the must weight here was marginally lower than from the younger vines that informed the non-Grosses Gewächs bottling.” Iris and honeysuckle, cooling green herbal essences and smoky black tea, white peach and mirabelle billow from the glass, then reprise on a creamy, buoyant palate. As you swallow (or, regretfully, spit), the fruit and flowers are overtaken by a rush of smoky, stony, crystalline mineral matter and a mouthwatering scallop-like sweet-saline savor.

From red slate and loam from the Rotliegend, the dry 2014 Riesling Monzinger Frühlingsplätzchen GG is lovely, clear, pure and ripe yet still somewhat reductive on the stony, floral and yeasty-flavored nose. Medium-bodied and compact on the palate, this is a very elegant and well concentrated dry and mineral Riesling with an excellent finish. Do not underrate this GG simply because it is not that powerful; it is intense, compact and long, but still on its way. It will gain even more complexity over the years in the bottle.
Crab apple, lime and lemon. Smooth, rounded and dense, but the fruit retains plenty of zippy refreshment. (RH)
