Lamarche’s iconic monopole is a narrow 1.65-hectare plot across the road from the Romanée Grands Crus. This is, as ever, a bit more reserved in comparison to Lamarche’s other Grands Crus. Once you start swirling, however, La Grande Rue starts talking – revealing white flowers, crushed red strawberry and plump raspberry. There’s riper fruit behind with a creamy touch to the palate, before the sapid acidity arrives. Layers of ripeness build around the acidity, creating a concentrated wine yet one that is all about finesse, with very supple tannins. The most impressive element of all is the finish – incredibly long, marked by clean, sharp salinity that lifts the wine and seems eternal. This will need a few years to show its full potential. Drink 2035+.
