Hold the glass to your nose: gunpowder and roses. War and love. Almost Nebbiolo-like. Finer than Sankt Paul. Quite stunning, in fact. Velvet and iron. Rust and cranberries, Pomegranate and spices. This is a powerhouse of beauty. A colosseum – elliptical, carved from stone, magnificent, intimidating, awesome, immovable. As full of light as it is of shadow. (TC)

The 2019 Pinot Noir Schweigener Heydenreich Grosses Gewächs, located above Sankt Paul, was grown on limestone and has just a little smokiness on the nose. Air does it a world of good, and gentle, ripe, juicy cherry appears, wrapped in soft smoke. The palate is delicate, clear and translucent, with fine-boned tannins. With shimmering red fruit and beautiful balance. Tannins are superfine, like starched silk, crunching slightly and bursting with juiciness. This is dense but so fine, so bright and supremely elegant. (Bone-dry)
Becker's 2019 Pfalz Pinot Noir "Heydenreich" VDP. Grosse Lage shows deep, clear, elegant and mature fruit with spicy cherry aromas. Powerfully elegant and fresh on the palate, this is a firm and pleasantly astringent Pinot Noir from Schweigen that is perhaps still a touch too robust but very juicy and long-lasting. It still needs some time in bottle. 13.5% stated alcohol. Tasted in Wiesbaden, August 2022.
