Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2020-2026, Josh Raynolds, Feb 2017

Bright violet. A deeply perfumed bouquet evokes ripe dark berries, licorice, allspice and incense, lifted by a smoky mineral overtone. Coats the palate with intense blackberry, boysenberry and cola flavors that spread out steadily with air. Shows a suave blend of richness and finesse, finishing very long and sweet, with smooth tannins sneaking in late.

The 2014 St Joseph Domaine de La Croix des Vignes offers an unmistakable minerality as well as classic Northern Rhône characteristics of new saddle leather, peppery herbs, red and black fruits and bacon fat. Coming from vines just south of the picturesque Vignes de Hospice vineyard, this medium-bodied, supple, elegant and finesse-driven beauty will keep for a decade.

Bright purple. Vibrant dark fruit and floral aromas are complicated by suggestions of peppery spices and smoky minerals. Gently sweet, palate-staining blackberry, cherry cola and spicecake flavors show impressive focus, and a hint of licorice builds on the back half. Smooth, sweet and lively on the gently tannic finish, which leaves behind notes of allspice and dark berries.

Only the second vintage for the cuvee, there was a scant two demi-muid made of the 2014 Saint Joseph Croix de Vignes Blanc. Made from 67% Marsanne and 33% Roussanne it comes from vines located in the northern part of the appellation, almost bordering Condrieu. Lemon curd, honeyed citrus and orange blossom characteristics all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, layered, and beautifully rich Saint Joseph Blanc that has notable freshness and purity. It's already hard to resist, but will evolve for at least a decade.
