Basil, cress, apple and celery root mark the 2019 Riesling Kanzemer Altenberg Kabinett A.P. #6 as another of Von Othegraven’s 2019s to offer an appealingly cooling and subtly saline set of flavors not so typical of the 2019 vintage. White peach adds a luscious element on the polished, buoyant palate, while seed piquancy lends a faint glow to the infectiously juicy and vibrantly sustained finish. This beauty originated in a high-elevation parcel and boasts the highest acidity of any Von Othegraven 2019. (There was once again a special auction lot of Altenberg Kabinett from 2019 – bearing A.P. #7 – but I have not tasted it.)

Auctioned in September this year, the 2019 Kanzemer Altenberg Riesling Kabinett (Versteigerung) is clear, fine and elegant on the flinty and beautifully reductive nose with its floral slate aromas. Filigreed and salty-piquant on the palate, this is a round, juicy, very delicate and finely grippy Kabinett from the proud grand cru next to the domain. The wine is intense and fine, very long and tight but also sweeter and less vibrantly fresh than the regular Kabinett. 8.5% alcohol. Tasted from AP 07 20 in October 2020.
Sweeter and a tad sherbety, the Altenberg is the impetuous one among von Othegraven’s Kabinett quartet, and although it possesses the trademark fresh green herbal qualities, it seems a little more straight down the line with ripe apple and grapefruit lifted by animating acidity. (MS)
