Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2027-2037, Josh Raynolds, Dec 2022

Opaque violet color. Displays potent, mineral-accented dark berry preserve and incense aromas that are complemented by floral, olive and musky spice nuances. Chewy, densely packed and focused on the palate, offering intense blackberry, blueberry, candied violet and smoky bacon flavors that become livelier with air. Finishes on lingering mineral and floral notes, with solid thrust, youthfully gripping tannins and excellent persistence.

The 2019 Cornas Domaine De Saint Pierre is pretty and finesse oriented, with plenty of ripe blackberry and ripe cherry fruit as well as spice and peppery herbs. It’s medium-bodied, has supple tannins and good balance, but is not particularly long or rich. While the wheels haven’t come completely off at this estate, there’s a significant drop in terms of quality starting with the 2019s and continuing with the 2020s. Whether this is simply COVID related or indicative of a larger issue is yet to be determined. To be sure, the wines are still well-made, but to have access to some of the greatest terroirs in the world and to be producing mid-weight, lean wines is disappointing to say the least.

The full-bodied 2019 Cornas Domaine de Saint Pierre delivers attractive notes of mixed plums and crushed stone. Not overly rich or concentrated, it looks to be an early-maturing Cornas, with silky tannins framing a lingering finish.

Vibrant blackberry, cherry and floral pastille aromas are complicated by suggestions of exotic spices and smoky minerals. Penetrating, appealingly sweet black/blue fruit flavors gain weight and spiciness as the wine opens up. Broad, well-knit tannins add gentle grip to a long, floral-dominated finish that leaves a repeating mineral note behind.
