The 2022 Riesling Ried Steiner Pfaffenberg Alte Reben is deep, intense and complex on the concentrated nose that intermingles ripe and dense stone fruit aromas with weathered rocks and crushed salt. Round and lively on the dense and elegant palate, this is a full-bodied, saline, very mineral, substantial and persistent Pfaffenberg from roughly 70-year-old vines on gneiss and schist. The finish is layered, dense, complex and very long and provided with grapefruit and lemon bitters, indicating excellent aging potential. This is another extraordinary Pfaffenberg from Erich Krutzler that he sources from the oldest of his five plots of the Pfaffenberg that borders the Wachau yet is officially part of the Kremstal. Rightly so. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in April 2024.

The 2022 Riesling Pfaffenberg Alte Reben was fermented in stainless steel, aged with lees in one large 1,500-liter barrel, and spent a second winter on lees in barrel. The slightest reduction precedes fine, clear, bright lemon on the nose. This has a soothing, cooling, luminous quality that, while immensely concentrated, is also totally fine. Again, a touch of lemon oil rather than fresh zest sits beautifully with this complex wine that seems to reveal one layer of aromatic lemon after another. The 2022 is smooth, soothing, bright, beautifully serene and calm. (Bone-dry)
