Punteggio 95/100 · Da bere 2024-2036, Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate, Sep 2024

The 2021 The Freedom 1843 Shiraz has a rich, pillowy nose that is laden with velvety red fruits, coffee cream, iodine, squid ink and salted licorice. In the mouth, the wine is languid, intense and unhurried, the opposite of rushed. With vines this old, it is no wonder they produce fruit characterized by their tantric ability to go slow. This is a huge wine of impact and stature, but it delivers finesse and detail as well. One must be comfortable with the former to understand the latter. 14.8% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Punteggio 18.5/20 · Da bere 2026-2036, Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com, May 2024

Langmeil Winery vineyard planted in 1843 on own roots. The soil is dark, rich loam over limestone and ironstone, to red clay over limestone and ironstone. 250–257 m in elevation. Hand-picked fruit, destemming, open fermentation, basket pressing. 26 months in oak, 46% new and 54% seasoned French oak hogsheads and barriques. Screwcap. Deep crimson. Rich, ripe, blueberry fruit not overwhelmed by the oak. To balance the sweetness of the fruit, there is a dark, peppery note. On the palate, an elegant dark restraint but also a floral whisper. Beautiful wine, finely modulated, elegant tannins. Very, very long, the alcohol fully integrated. (JH)
