Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2026-2055, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, Feb 2026

Entirely sourced in the Abtsberg and based on a potpourri of clones from Burgundy (777 and 828) and Germany (Geisenheim and Freiburg), the 2022 Maximin Grünhaus Pinot Noir Grünhäuser 1G opens with a ripe, fresh, refined and elegant bouquet of dark and fleshy cherries and well-integrated woody and nutty nuances. Silky textured and remarkably finessed, this is a full-bodied, juicy, savory, stimulating, fresh and saline Pinot that was aged in small barrels for 18 months. The tannins are delicate and spicy, and the finish is clear, fresh and dry. Bottled in June 2024. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in January 2026.

AP number 43 24. Aus Ersten Lagen. Mid crimson. Unusual aroma of blackberry and mulberry, not typical Pinot aromas. Fine tannins but a little lean on the mid palate. (JH)

The 2022 Pinot Noir Grünhauser Erste Lage comes from the same parcels as the GG, picked earlier and made with less new wood. Beautifully crunchy dark cherry and a dusting of cocoa greet the nose. The palate is dense and ripe with a taut mouthfeel due to the slate. Fine freshness and smooth, ripe tannins create a lasting cherry echo.

To released in September when they have decided which barrels go into the GG and what’s left for the Aus Ersten Lagen bottling. Cask sample. Deep blueish crimson. Smells like young red burgundy – Savigny perhaps! Smooth tannins and convincingly savoury fruit. Definitely needs time and there’s a little suggestion of oaky background still. But I’d love to revisit it next year. Promising. (JR)
