The Klein Constantia 2023 Constantia Perdeblokke Sauvignon Blanc comes from "the horse blocks," because horses were once used to till the soils. This site is located in an extreme position just above the tree line at the very top of the amphitheater and has more granite. The wine sees no new oak but ages in 500-liter barrels for nine months. The 2023 harvest was late, but picking time and the workflow was compressed because many blocks came to ripeness at once. Both 2021 and 2023 are great vintages for the Cape. This is a terrific expression thanks to its subdued and elegant bouquet and the creamy, almost fragile nature of the mouthfeel. I am reminded of the upper Loire Valley. Production is limited to 3,500 bottles (including magnums).

The 2023 Sauvignon Blanc Perdeblokke is a selection of five barrels from vineyards at 220 meters above sea level. Matured in neutral 550-liter oak for nine months, it has a light Granny-Smith- and nettle-scented bouquet that needs a little more vigor. The palate has a pleasant sharpness on the entry. Steely and vibrant, green apple flavors mix with light peppery notes on the finish. This is a delightful Sauvignon Blanc.
