This palpably dense but texturally rich, amply juicy and mouthwateringly salt-tinged bottling is formidable from the starting gate and gains stature with aeration. Lavender and chalk dust mingle with sweat and sourdough yeastiness in a nose-wrinkling display of pungency that anticipates the palate’s multifaceted and intriguingly mineral personality. A bottle open for six days displayed even greater grip and resonance, not to mention clarity and focus, than the one freshly opened and proved highly agreeable without being in the least less formidable.

The 2014 Riesling Idig VDP.Grosse Lage is very clear, cool, precise, fresh and clearly characterized by the Idig limestone, with citric and almost flinty notes reminiscent of iodine. Silky, round and supple on the palate, this is very elegant and balanced, almost soft and seamless in texture. The stimulating, mouth-watering finish is persistently salty and spicy, balanced and with delicate bitter citrus notes. This is a wonderful classic to drink now, 10 years after the harvest. Tasted at the Rebholz Kastanienbusch/Christmann Idig/Wittmann Morstein vertical tasting in Westhofen in late August 2024.
Fresh hay and meadow flowers on the nose give the Idig a truly summery appeal. The palate is shaped by an intricate combination of herbal and mineral nuances, although an affirmative acidity adds quite a juicy tangent. Never mind power, taste the subtlety. (MS)
