The vines for this were planted in 2004 in a cool, northwesterly exposed portion of the clay- and calcaire-rich Paterberg – all of which sounds like good news with Pinot. Sweat, leather, and a faintly rancid hint of caramelized oak resin mingle on the nose with scents of blackberry and sour cherry. Things improve on the palate, which is a bit stiff, but boasts pleasant lift (alcohol here being only around 12.5%) as well as strong ripe fruit flavors, with rose hip and marjoram adding interest. The finish is admirably juicy, only marginally perturbed by oak resin, and benefits from a saliva-inducing lick of salt.

The 2017 Paterberg Pinot Noir GG is remarkably pure and fine as well as deep and stony on the nose that intertwines delicate red berries with floral aromas. Silky and charmingly elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied and concentrated but fresh and delicate Pinot with firm tannins, crunchy phenols and beautifully sweet fruit. The finish is tight but still fine and very long. This is one of the finest 2017 Pinots I have tasted from all of Germany. Tasted in Wiesbaden in August 2019.
