The 2015 von Buhl Riesling Brut (LAP 5017) has an intense, straw-yellow color and opens with a beautifully fine, fresh and perfectly ripe nose of white fruits, brioche and Turkish honey. On the palate, this is an intense, dry, round and very elegant, pure and delicate Riesling Sekt. It is packed with stewed apples and pears, but it remains pure, fresh and provided with a beautiful oxidative touch that adds complexity (just 5% oak in this vintage). The finish is clear, dry, fresh, well-structured and enormously stimulating (and that's really remarkable given this warm and dry vintage). This is one of the finest Riesling Bruts you can find in Germany. And it is just the beginning of the saga here...

The citrus-colored, dry 2015 Von Buhl Riesling (AP 01 16) has a clear, precise and refreshing nose with reduced fruit; the aromas are already far more complex than what you expect from a Gutswein. The wine has grip and character on the palate, and is stimulatingly crisp. It is so clear and pure, like only very few German Rieslings. Don't expect this wine fully ripe or lush; it is built more on freshness and grip. Mathieu Kaufmann is teaching his (French) understanding of terroir, through I am not sure if he overtaxes his German VDP colleagues, who often think of grand cru as a category of marketing instead of an expression of terroir.
