Tasted at the winery, the 2017 Etna Rosso Passorosso comes from this very hot vintage but offers gorgeous notes of ripe cherries, fresh leather, dried herbs, and pressed flowers. Medium-bodied, with a velvety texture, ripe tannins, and a long-lasting finish, it’s quite fresh and not showing much development and is in a great place right now. Drink 2025-2035. Coming from the eponymous village in the north side of Etna, they will be certified organic next year.

The 2017 Etna Rosso Passorosso is a mid-weight wine with added succulence and concentration that comes naturally to this vintage. The wine shows the characteristics of Etna with wild berry aromas that cede to blue flower, smoke, tar, toasted aniseed and campfire ash. This is one of the most accessible and easy-drinking reds from Andrea Franchetti. Some 60,000 bottles were made.
Cask sample, will be bottled next year. Mid crimson. Brooding cherry nose which reminds me a little of Brunello di Montalcino. Succulent and generous fruit tied together by wonderful powdery long tannins. Hedonistic yet elegant. (WS)
