Nectarine and jellied red currant aromas in the 2007 Eitelsbacher Karthauserhofberg Riesling Spatlese Nr. 12 (A.P. #23) lead into a rich palate display of caramel- and honey-tinged pit- and red fruits, tingling with fresh citrus; exuberant and buoyant; and finishing with lip-smacking generosity and refreshment. Despite this wine’s considerable sweetness, it displays mineral nuances along with brown spices, and refinement aplenty. I would have no concerns about following it for at least two decades. Christoph Tyrell – like his Ruwer neighbors – had a far more successful vintage in 2007 than in 2006, although his lighter dry wines were a bit shrill and reminiscent of marginally ripe Sauvignon Blanc (more gooseberry than red currant; cassis leaf than black currant). His numerous Auslesen – while they won’t make one forget their amazing 2005 counterparts – are nonetheless noteworthy, and sure to be long-lived. Dense, citrus nose. Very firm and steely – well done! Not at all floral or obviously aromatic. Clear slate signature. Ample bunch of different fruits on the nose – very winning. Zesty, crystal cut fruit on the palate. (JR)
