The 2014 La Grave a Pomerol conveys an almost comforting sense of warmth and homeliness on the nose. It is not complex or intense, yet it is very well defined and offers a beguiling fireside hearth/burning embers scent that infuses the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a slight toastiness on the entry. It is well balanced with a sense of roundness and softness, yet it is not flabby in any way, just a Pomerol that welcomes you with arms open wide.

The 2014 La Grave offers good depth in the midweight style of the year. Succulent red cherry, plum, licorice, tobacco and menthol are front and center. The 2014 is an especially open-knit wine today, although it has a good bit of aromatic freshness as well. Time has softened the tannins nicely, while the expression of fruit is a bit more overt than it was when I saw the wine in barrel.
Not to be confused with the similarly titled Pomerol estate, the 2014 Château La Grave from the Médoc has a tightly wound, rather conservative bouquet that needs to develop more personality. The palate is medium-bodied with a lot of chocolaty oak that makes it feel overdone and it loses Bordeaux typicité. Drink over the next couple of years. Tasted September 2016.
Deep crimson. Light, fresh and vivacious on the nose. Really quite delicate and forward. Friendly and very smooth textured. Acidity more pronounced than tannins but not to excess. A charmer. (JR)
