Yann Chave’s 2006 Hermitage is still fresh and lively, with a polished, elegant, medium to full-bodied style that took time to open in the glass. Showing classic notes of saddle leather, beef blood and peppery herbs, it has good acidity, plenty of fruit and is just now entering its prime drink window. It should evolve gracefully for a decade.

Opaque ruby. Sexy aromas of cherry-cola, raspberry, smoked meat and violet. Suave, finely etched red fruit, candied violet and licorice flavors are underscored by rooty sassafras and cola qualities and firmed by dusty tannins. The tannins recede on the finish, which is energetic, sweet and very persistent. This is already delicious.
Smells sweeter and riper than the Crozes but still has that dark charred spicy edge and the perfumed note. Richly and sweetly oaked, with the oak dominating the palate at the moment. Cool dry finish. (JH) Montrachet dpd £402
Inky ruby. Fresh raspberry and floral aromas are deepened by a subtle cola quality, picking up zesty minerality and baking spices with air. Pliant red fruit flavors expand across the palate, with juicy acidity adding lift and precision. A suave and approachable style, with sweet fruit to the fore.
