FINE+RARE, Nov 2024

This is a beautifully elegant expression of fine Tokaji. Honey, marmalade and lemon pith mingle with honeysuckle, white florals and delicate acacia blossom. There’s a delicious viscosity to the palate, but cut by a line of pinpoint, taut acidity that dominates the mouth-watering finish, accompanied by citrus pith and candied peel. Aged in older 300- and 500-litre Hungarian oak for over two years, with 11% alcohol and 197.1g/l residual sugar.

100% Furmint. Blend of the best Aszú berries mainly sourced from Royal Tokaji’s own classed growth vineyards. Effectively leftovers from the single-vineyard bottlings.  RS 197.1 g/l, TA 6.75 g/l. 37,770 bottles made. Deep gold. Low-key nose and extremely sweet with a hint of golden syrup but with the trademark acidity. Not that intense. (JR)

The 2018 Tokaji Gold Label 6-Puttonyos is a different beast to the 5-Puttonyos, as expected, laden with much more concentration and richness on the nose, with marmalade quince and a hint of melted candle wax. This is fairly powerful in style. The palate is beautifully balanced with a viscous entry, but there is much more complexity here, with superb tension and notes of marmalade, peach skin, fresh fig and orange pith. What marks this Tokaji out is that despite the residual sugar and concentration, it is nimble, light on its feet and doesn't pall after the first glass. Outstanding. (197.1g/l residual sugar and 6.75g/l acidity)

A fresh and floral nose of candied citrus fruit, orange blossoms, dried orange peel and dried herbs. Hints of walnuts and vanilla, too. Very elegant on the palate, with impressive acidity that balanced the sweetness. Focused, compact and very long. Pure furmint. Drink or hold.
