Opaque ruby. Lively, mineral-accented cherry and black raspberry aromas are complemented by suggestions of exotic spices, violet and white pepper. Silky and broad in the mouth, offering intense red and blue fruit liqueur, spicecake and floral pastille flavors that become sweeter as the wine stretches out. The floral note carries strongly through the expansive, spice-accented finish, which shows real energy and velvety, slow-building tannins.

The 2017 Cote Rotie Champin le Seigneur (tasted from a couple of different barrels, one new) will have about 30% new oak in the final blend. Expect some charred notes and hints of vanilla, but the blackberry fruit seems more powerful this vintage, giving the wine a creamy, supple feel on the medium to full-bodied palate.
This has a very rich and attractively fleshy feel with dark berries and milk chocolate and a fine, dense and still drinkable finish. Drink now.
Barrel sample. Delicious meat, violet and black cherry fruit. Excellent perfume and opulence. Long, fluffy finish. Tactile, somehow. Really good clarity and complexity. (RH)
