Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2023-2034, Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux, Jul 2021

The first vintage where La Parde de Haut-Bailly (in production since 1967) became Haut-Bailly II, and although young, it can be opened now, and will really start to deliver over the next few years. There is such control on display, with the balance and finesse that you expect from the team here, majoring on a ton of cassis, bilberry, liqourice, pencil lead and cigar box. 30% new oak.

The 2018 Haut-Bailly II has a very endearing bouquet of mixed red and black fruit, cedar and sandalwood, plus light white pepper scents and a touch of Earl Grey, all very well defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with black olive/brine-tinged black fruit. This is a spicy Deuxième Vin from the team at Haut-Bailly, so much so that the mouth tingles with residual pepperiness for 30 seconds after it has exited. It needs 2–3 years in bottle for the tannins to soften, but it will then drink well for up to 15 years.

Showing nicely, the 2018 Haut-Bailly II (65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon) reveals a healthy ruby/purple color as well as classy notes of black cherries, cassis, leafy tobacco, and earth. It's medium to full-bodied and has a light, elegant texture, moderate tannins, and just loads of up-front charm and drinkability. It doesn't have the depth or richness of the Grand Vin, but it's still going to improve for 2-4 years and keep for a decade or more. I'd be happy to drink a bottle.
