The 2021 Morgon Grand Cras suffered a lot of loss as Godard told me it is sensitive to rain and consequently there are no stems used in this cuvée. Maybe because of that, this has quite a pinot-like bouquet of redcurrant and raspberry fruit, plus a touch of brown spices. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, quite strict. Towards the finish it attenuates a little. Very fine, although I prefer the Corcelette by direct comparison.

Full bottle 1,307 g. In conversion to organic certification. 60-year-old vines. Over the years I've been tasting them, Mee Godard's wines seem to be on the most extraordinary trajectory from concentration to ethereality. At the same time, they are as compelling as they have ever been, perhaps more so. The always-powerful, always darker-fruited Grand Cras is a study in blackberries and winter herbs and crushed hedgerow stems, but the flute-like notes of the fruit have a red-glimmer purity and the tannins are tightly muscled but finely stitched. The classic characteristics of her Grand Cras, coal dust and black rock, are there, but lingering in the framework like a penumbra rather than dominating the mid palate. The 2021 has a forward-leaning fragrance, a cool, long breath; her most graceful Grand Cras yet. (TC)
