The 2021 Morgon Côte du Py, which includes 60% stems, offers a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, touches of cold granite and tar coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and crunchy red berry fruit, very finely balanced with a composed, quite spicy finish. Good potential.

If you've ever climbed a mountain following a stream, up and up, ever cooler, into the mist, where the lichen thickens on rocks and your hands are brushing ferns aside, slipping on moss; where the stream rushes slimmer, faster, colder, clearer the higher you go, you'll have a sense of this wine. It's scarlet wild berries, it's the mineral-earth smell-taste of years of decaying pine needles and dense layers of green-turning-gold-turning-red-turning-brown leaves on ever-wet stones. There's a fine, crushed-pencil bitterness at the heart of the wine and taffeta tannins are tucked imperceptibly into the reticent fruit. Slender elegance taking it to the verge of sparse, but it doesn't cross the line. (TC)
