This comes largely from the Steingrube Einzellage in Westhofen (which is also an excellent Riesling site, though not one that Keller showcases). The apple and pear notes on the nose anticipate a succulent, juicy fruitiness that is more overt than one usually experiences from this grape. There are also intimations of chalk dust in the nose that get vividly realized on the polished, buoyant palate. Herbal inflections typical for Silvaner add to the interest of an ultra-refreshing finish in which piquancy of fruit pips invigorates rather than blocking.

Vines are 35+ years old in Bürgel and Steingrube. Six hours’ skin contact. Cask sample. Aroma of spicy pears – smells rich and deep and has a very attractive slight grip in the mouth. Real intensity and utterly mouth-watering. Terrific concentration and still light on its feet. Deliciously dry. (JH)
