There were just two barrels of the 1990 Clos de la Roche Cuvée Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru Cuvée Spéciale Vieillisement Prolongé that was harvested at the end of October/beginning of November and matured for 60 months in barrel. It certainly has a more decadent bouquet than the regular cuvée: dark berry fruit, black tea, dried blood, perhaps just a touch of brettanomyces? The palate is well-balanced with grainy tannins and fine acidity. Pronounced menthol notes come through toward the finish. Tasted at Ponsot's 150th anniversary vertical at the Domaine.

The 1990 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée Vieilles Vignes is a very fine example of the vintage, wafting from the glass with aromas of plums and red fruit compote mingled with notions of orange rind, licorice, rose petals, meat jus and spices. Full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a sweet core of fruit and a broad-shouldered, expansive profile, it's a ripe, powerful rendition of this bottling.
Domaine Ponsot’s 1990 Clos de la Roche Vielles Vignes was quite possibly the wine of the night. Endowed with massive amounts of fruit, it flowed onto the palate with superb concentration and precision.

Domaine Ponsot is one of the most well-known estates in the Côte de Nuits, famed for owning three of the original four hectares of the Clos de la Roche Grand Cru. The legendary domaine also produces another nine Grand Cru cuvées.
