Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2012-2027, Robert Parker, Dec 2012

This is an impressive wine, as is the 2010 Cornas Lieu-Dit Les Eygats (111 cases produced). From a high altitude vineyard in the southern section of the appellation, and harvested very late, this 2010 offers up scents of prunes, figs, black fruits and chocolate as well as abundant tannin in a bold, flamboyant, stylish format. Forget this Cornas for several years and drink it over the following 10-15. The quality of Ferraton’s wines has been increasing with nearly every new vintage thanks to the efforts of Michel Chapoutier and his number one assistant, P.H. Morel, who has the responsibilities for these wines. I have included a few Southern Rhones that were not reviewed in Issue #203. Some of the 2011 white wines are in bottle, but the more serious cuvees are still in barrel. Ferraton produced four lieu-dit offerings in 2011, which I tasted with Michel Chapoutier and Pierre-Henri Morel. Importer: A French Paradox, Peoria, IL; tel. (309) 682-8994

Dark purple. More brooding and even darker in profile than the Patou, offering cassis, licorice and dark chocolate aromas and flavors, along with a hint of espresso. Rich, deeply concentrated and a bit of a tough read right now. The finish lingers with impressive intensity and leaves dark berry and candied licorice notes behind.
