Punteggio 89/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2014

Saturated bright ruby. Slightly high-toned kirsch , violet and licorice pastille aromas. Broad and youthfully primary, with moderately concentrated but rather elegant dark cherry and berry flavors. Sweet and surprisingly easygoing. Tannins are a bit dusty but not dry. Not bad but I expected more complexity and length from this producer in 2011. (I should note that I've seen higher scores for this port from other critics.)

The 2011 Ramos Pinto has a lifted bouquet of black cherries, creme de cassis and licorice that is intense but does not quite have the delineation of some of its peers at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine line of acidity and perhaps more pedigree than the aromatics. There is splendid weight here and an engaging harmonious finish with a sprinkle of white pepper and a little clove. Affording several minutes with this sample, the nose gains clarity with aeration, so I might be inclined to give this decanting before pouring. Tasted May 2013.

Dark purple but paler than many. So raw! A little severe and tough. Much lighter and more austere than the Symington 2011s. Wait for ages! Grainy. (JR)
