Punteggio 96/100 · Da bere 2021-2042, David Schildknecht, Vinous, Mar 2023

This auctioned offering leads with penetrating, site-typical evocations of lemon and tangerine and their crushed pips, accompanied by sweet-smoky Madagascar peppercorn and struck flint. There are zesty sizzle, pungent smokiness and electrically-charged animations on the palate, though not without succulence as well as underlying polish and gloss. The finish is strikingly transparent with riveting diversity and is preternaturally vibrant and sensationally persistent.

The 2020 Pettenthal GG (Auction) is clear and intense on the still finely reductive nose that indicates delicately ripe and juicy fruit. Intense and powerful on the palate, this is a complex and juicy as well as taut and grippy Kabinett with a sustainable and salty finish. Very promising. Tasted in Wiesbaden in August 2021. The wine will be auctioned in November this year.

Once a site famous for its noble sweet wines, the Pettenthal has become the great discovery of the German Grosse Gewächse scene. Only available in very limited quantities, it has become the darling of the auction bidders but also of many wine critics, who can’t afford to buy it. Coming from a different district and terroir than KP’s other GGs, it’s not (much) better but different. Mineral and herbal aromas take more of a back seat and are happy just to support the more prominent floral and fruity expression. But it would not be Klaus Peter if he just left it at the initial generosity of ripe sweet yellow fruit served on a rich texture. Lemon receives a dab of honey, grapefruit shines with vibrant acidity, a hint of bitter orange adds piquancy. The final piece of the puzzle is supplied by a dynamic mineral energy. (MS)

Such an expressive mango and papaya nose with a wild touch. Overwhelming concentration and energy on the medium-bodied palate, the enormous mineral and lime-zest freshness at the finish lifting you up into the heavens. Bottled almost completely in magnums. Drink or hold.
