Punteggio 93/100 · James Suckling, May 2019

A blend of cooler and warmer-climate Barossa parcels here. A complex, spicy edge with dark berries, framed in succulent, long and rich tannins. Density and depth in abundance. Drink or hold.

Another gem in the lineup, the 2016 Shiraz Barossa & Eden Valleys is equal parts from each region brought up in foudre. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by scents of black raspberries, currants, incense, Christmas spice, and sage, with exotic peppery notes developing with time in the glass. Full-bodied, deep, silky and layered, on the palate, it’s another brilliant wine from this family that’s going to keep for over a decade.

Taking price into account, the GMS and this wine, the 2016 Barossa & Eden Valleys Shiraz, are my favorites in the Powells' lineup. The blend is 50-50, as there was a single foudre from each region used in the blend. The nose is more floral and garrigue-like than the straight Barossa Shiraz, with mulberry and blueberry fruit mingling easily on the palate. It's full-bodied, creamy-textured and rich, with a concentrated, velvety finish that's a clear step up from the entry-level wines.
