Auctioned in Trier in September 2015, the 2014 Saarburger Rausch Riesling Spätlese #3 (Versteigerung) is sourced from old vines and offers concentrated and piquant plum and mango, as well as some lemon peel aromas, intertwined with smoky/flinty flavors. Nicely concentrated and juicy on the palate, this pure, clear and refreshingly piquant Spätlese is stimulating already today, but will bring great drinking pleasure for 20-30 years and more. Pineapple flavors in the aftertaste.

Nose-prickling intimations of botrytis presage the honey, quince preserves, almond paste and brown spices that accent a lusciously juicy core of ripe cherry, peach, Persian melon and mango on an expansive, silken-textured palate. Lemon zest, smoke, stone and cherry pit piquancy all add stimulating counterpoint to a long-lasting, impeccably balanced, multifaceted finish.
A great Spätlese is always about more than just fruit, and though the 2014 Rausch is not lacking in that department, it also exhibits some spicy and fumy aromas which come from the extra ripeness of the grapes. On the palate the wine proves that invigorating acidity and creamy texture do not exclude each other, and a tangy touch of orange peel completes a superb Spätlese which easily matches the morning dew for freshness.
