Tasted from a 375-milliliter bottle, the 2016 Graacher Domprobst Riesling Auslese (AP #11) offers a very clear, super ripe but still healthy bouquet of perfectly ripe Riesling intermixed with flinty, slightly caramelly aromas. On the palate, this is a lithe yet complex, piquant, refreshingly mineral and highly elegant Domprobst Auslese that reveals a firm, tensioned structure in the long, salty, already stimulating finish. Honeydew and muskmelons are joined by Golden Delicious apple and mango on a headily ripe nose and an impressively rich, luscious, creamy, glycerol-slicked palate. Yet delicacy and buoyancy, common denominators of the present collection, are alluringly evident. The soothing, superbly sustained finish introduces a hint of caramel that points to the presence of botrytis.
The high levels of sweetness almost overwhelm the palate here, but there is just enough acidic spritz to freshen the finish. There seemed to be more fruit complexity in their Domprobst Spätlese Fuder 5. (RH)
White tropical flower aromas and a hint of Thai basil in the nose. Concentrated and filigree, succulent and pristine, everything fitting together beautifully. Super-clean finish in which the sweetness is barely perceptible, even at the early stage in the game of decades.
