Deep red-ruby. Crushed blackberry, violet and espresso on the nose. Intense, sweet and sappy, with a primary crushed fruit quality and bright balancing acidity. Supple, fleshy and dense, if not yet particularly complex. Finishes with good breadth and length, firm-edged tannins and a late hint of dried flowers. (An earlier bottle was too reduced to assess.)

The seamless, medium to full-bodied 2002 Morey-St.-Denis Les Chaffots reveals a nose of black cherries and spices. Black fruits, tar, spices, and dark cherries can be found in its plush, harmonious, beautifully ripened personality as well as in its prolonged finish. Anticipated maturity: now-2012. Full ruby-red. Nuanced nose offers black cherry, framboise, mocha, rose petal and sweet oak. Sweet and fat on entry, then taut in the middle, with a pronounced stony character and enticing floral perfume. Aromatically complex, precise and firmly tannic, with reined-in sweetness. Youthfully backward wine in need of five or six years of aging.
