Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2024-2032, Josh Raynolds, Dec 2022

Dark violet color. Displays powerful aromas of dark berries and cherry-cola, baking spices, and vanilla, with a smoky nuance that builds as the wine opens up. Fleshy and broad on the palate, offering intense black raspberry and boysenberry flavors and a touch of candied flowers. Finishes seamless and long, with an echo of florality and supple tannins that add shape and final grip.

Another head-turning Saint Joseph from this team, the blue/black-hued 2018 Saint Joseph Les Royes has tons of obvious minerality as well as notes of smoked black and blue fruits, graphite, liquid violets, and pepper. With flawless balance, silky tannins, and remarkable purity, it's another concentrated, tight, closed wine that's going to benefit from at least 4-5 years of bottle age.

Lifted on the nose, with hints of nail polish remover, I'm confident the bottled 2018 Saint Joseph Les Royes will turn out fine. Cherries and raspberries appear in a medium to full-bodied wine that shows more structure and acidity than the regular Saint Joseph, finishing long and crisp.
